More Background
In January 2014, I started working with the Waukee Public Library on possible ideas for my Eagle Scout Project in order to reach Scouting's highest rank. Following the Library's renovation in Fall 2013, construction crews left the front of the original building and new addition in rough shape.
As you can see in these photos, the Waukee Public Library needed and deserved a more inviting welcome area for the community to share. As an 8th Grade student at Waukee Middle School just across the street, I was excited to make this happen! After working with the Library's Director and Garden Club Volunteers to keep this consistent with the facility's Prairie-Style, my project in June 2014 dug up all of the old existing plants, installed metal bed edging, laid weed barrier fabric, and planted nearly 35 new shrubs, bushes, perennial flowers and grasses. We finished the beds with either natural cedar mulch or river rock depending on the landscape location. I again want to personally thank all of the friends, families, and area businesses who supported me with their time, their products, and/or financial donations to make this dream become a reality. I raised just over $3,000 total, and we collectively spent 88 labor hours on the work day alone split among 14 Scouts and 12 adults. |
